OUTBREAK: Namibia records 2,210 cases of malaria

A TOTAL of 2,210 malaria cases have been reported, including 265 hospital admissions and nine deaths, from 4 November to 15 December.

At least 16 malaria-endemic districts have surpassed the epidemic threshold and are experiencing outbreaks, the Ministry of Health and Social Services said in a recent statement.

A significant increase in malaria cases was reported in the most malaria-endemic regions of Namibia, and the Ministry is now calling on all Namibians and travelers to the northern and northeastern parts of the country to take all necessary precautions to prevent malaria infections.

The affected health districts include Oshakati in Oshana Region; Eenhana, Okongo, and Engela (Ohangwena Region); Omuthiya, Onandjokwe, and Tsumeb (Oshikoto); Okahao, Tsandi, Outapi, and Oshikuku (Omusati); Rundu, Nyangana, and Andara (Kavango East); and Nkurenkuru and Ncamagoro (Kavango West).

Eenhana tops the list with 661 cases, followed by Okongo with 336 cases.​..

The country is currently grappling with a surge in malaria cases, with the Ministry of Health and Social Services reporting a total of 20 135 cases as of 9 March 2025.

Dr Kalumbi Shangula, the former Minister of Health and Social Services, said last week that 3 890 of these cases were recorded in the first few days of March alone.

He added that the outbreak, declared in December 2024, has resulted in 44 fatalities so far.

“The most affected health districts include Katima Mulilo, Andara, Nkurenkuru, Outapi, Engela, Eenhana, Okongo, and Nyangana,” he said.

Shangula said that the health ministry in collaboration with various stakeholders, has been actively engaged in response activities aimed at saving lives, educating the public, and containing the spread of malaria.​..

Malaria cases surge with 154 deaths

Health and social services minister Esperance Luvindao says 95 729 cumulative malaria cases and 154 deaths were recorded countrywide since the beginning of the year.

The Zambezi region has recorded the highest number of malaria cases, with 25 065 of the total number.

Luvindao revealed this in a speech read on her behalf by health ministry executive director Penda Ithindi at the belated commemoration of Malaria Day at Sibbinda constituency in the Zambezi region on Friday.

The Malaria Day theme was ‘Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite’.

The minister said the Kavango West region is second with 18 424 cases, followed by the Andara and Outapi districts with 12 964 and 7 963 cases, respectively.

She added that the 95 729 malaria cases reported nationally are six times higher than the 16 113 cases recorded in 2024. “The Zambezi region was most severely affected by the malaria outbreak during the peak season.

Tragically, malaria-related deaths have also surged this year, rising from 50 in 2024 to 154 in 2025, with a case fatality rate of 0.16,” she said.​..
