Myanmar says effective measures taken to control bird flu

Yangon, March 28 (NNN-MNA) The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department has confirmed the outbreak of H5N1 strain of bird flu at some poultry farms in Mayangon, Hlinethaya, North Okkalapa, Mingaladon and Hmawby townships in Myanmar’s Yangon Division.

Poultry, quails and pheasants of the affected farms as well as those from possible affected farms and those from farms that are contiguous with the affected farms were culled, and necessary preventive measures are being taken, it added.

From Feb 27 until March 26 this year, a total of 324 crows, pigeons, sparrows and doves had been found dead in townships in Yangon Division and were sent to the laboratory. According to the tests, most of the birds died of heat stroke, chronic bronchitis and small pox but six crows were suspected to being infected with the Bird Flu

The carcasses of 75 chicken and 22 geese sent from poultry farms of Insein, Mingaladon, Yankin, Thakayta, Ahlon, Kamayut, Thingangyun, Dagon township (North), Mayangon, Hmawby, Dagon township (East) and South Okkalapa in Yangon Division and Minhla township and Nattalin township in Bago Division also were not found to be infected with bird flu.

The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department warned breeders and those who are engaged in poultry marketing to use new farms equipment instead of the old ones at their poultry farms, to prevent crows from entering poultry farms, to boost bio-security and to co-operate with the local authorities, LBVD, Health Department, Yangon City Devlopment Committee and Livestock Breeding Federation that are engaged in control of the Bird Flu.
