83 died of Malaria in city this year, says BMC

Eighty-three people have died in the city due to malaria since January, confirmed an analysis done by the civic body?s death audit committee.
As per the data with the civic body there were 137 malaria deaths in and around the city. But the committee has now confirmed 83 as the official death toll.
?The mosquitoes breed in the area where there is stagnant water mainly the construction sites and the open water tanks,? said Executive Health Officer Dr Jairaj Thanekar.
?The civic body inspects and takes strict action against the offenders every year,? Thanekar added.
The civic body has served 2,107 construction sites with notices. Under this the construction sites have to pay some amount as advance for insecticide treatment in the surrounding area.
?This is a routine practice through which the municipal corporation collects nearly Rs 2.5 to Rs 3 crore as fine to be adjusted with the total expenditure incurred on fogging the locality surrounding the construction site,? said Deepak Adsule, insecticide officer of the BMC.
This year nearly 907 have been prosecuted for not complying with the notice so far. Also, notices have been slapped to the residents of the buildings that do not have the malaria proof tanks.
Death audit is an exercise in which one or more committees of senior hospital doctors sit together to analyse the circumstances that lead to the death of the patients.
The committee also discusses the possible measures that would have prevented the spread of the epidemic and would have prevented the deaths.
