Hundreds Potentially Exposed In Missoula Whooping Cough Outbreak

Missoula County health officials are investigating an outbreak of whooping cough that has sickened at least six Missoulians. Local health officials have identified hundreds more who may have been exposed to the contagious respiratory disease.
"We haven?t had an outbreak of this size with this range of ages in different schools since about 2012," says Missoula City-County Health Department Director Ellen Leahy.
She says the six confirmed cases range in age from preschool to teenagers. One patient required hospitalization.
As of Wednesday, five other whooping cough cases were suspected, pending lab results. A mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated children are among the cases. Over 300 others may have been exposed to the contagious disease that?s also called pertussis...

More cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, have been confirmed in Missoula, enough for the Director of the Missoula County Health Department Ellen Leahy to confirm what she termed ?a community wide outbreak?.
?We got 10 new positive tests, so that?s 10 new cases last night and that brings our Missoula total to 24 cases,? said Leahy. ?We?ve been very busy trying to identify close contacts with all of those folks and follow up with what all of their healthcare needs are and to answer any questions they may have.?
Leahy said the outbreak has grown beyond a couple of schools and families...

MISSOULA ? Local health officials say they have been working longer hours to keep up with the number of phone calls from parents concerned about the pertussis outbreak that?s hitting the Missoula area.
The Missoula City-County Health Department reported on Monday that there are now 52 confirmed whooping cough cases. Pertussis cases have been confirmed in several Missoula County Public Schools ? including Big Sky, Hellgate and Sentinel high schools.
Whooping cough cases have also been reported the Florence, Frenchtown and Lolo school districts. The Health Department is working closely with schools to identify close contacts of confirmed cases...

Montana health officials have recorded 265 people sick with whooping cough so far this year with a new wave of cases in Gallatin County over the last week.

BOZEMAN - Health officials are still trying to keep the Missoula whooping cough outbreak, which has reached 132 cases, under control. But the disease is now spreading in another Montana county.
Gallatin County is experiencing a major uptick in pertussis, which is commonly referred to as whooping cough, cases. As of Wednesday afternoon, 39 cases have been reported in Gallatin County, with five new cases reported on just Wednesday.
That's already more than double the 16 total cases reported in the county in 2018...
