Mozambique: Almost 100 new cases of cholera in Nampula

​According to official figures from the health authorities, the cholera outbreak in the Mozambican province of Nampula has caused around 100 new infections since Friday, bringing the number of cases to 579 in three districts.

On Saturday, the local health authorities confirmed cases of cholera in the districts of Nampula and Murrupula, as well as Mogovolas – which has already recorded a total of 29 deaths – with a total of 494 infected since October until Friday.

According to the data presented on Wednesday by the health authorities in Nampula, in the last 24 hours the number of cholera cases in the province has risen to 579, spread across Mogovolas (302), Nampula (166) and Murrupula (111).​..

Cholera outbreak spreading in Nampula province along with wave of disinformation

The outbreak of cholera in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, which began in October 2024, has now spread to the coastal district of Larde, according to a report on the independent television station, STV.

Cases have been reported from the provincial capital, Nampula city, and from the districts of Mogovolas and Murrupula. There has been a cumulative total of 1,143 cases diagnosed – 467 in Nampula city, 322 in Mogovolas, 240 in Murrupula, and 114 in Larde.

The health authorities have recorded 30 deaths from cholera – 29 in Mogovolas and one in Larde. 29 people are currently hospitalised in the cholera treatment wards – 16 in Nampula, eight in Larde and five in Murrupula.

As the disease has spread, so has a wave of disinformation about the causes of cholera, leading to mob attacks against community leaders, and against schools.

Last Thursday a mob attacked a primary school in Topuito locality, where they burnt text books intended for distribution to the pupils. They claimed that the school’s educational director was spreading cholera through the books...

Mozambique: Cholera outbreak has killed 57 since October

​The cholera outbreak in Mozambique has killed at least 57 people out of a total of almost 3,600 cases since October 2024, according to the latest figures from health authorities.

According to the Ministry of Health’s daily information bulletin on the evolution of the disease, in the north of the country the cholera outbreak was recorded in the districts of Mogovolas, Angoche, Murrupula, Larde and the city of Nampula, in the province of Nampula, with a cumulative of 3,188 cases in the same period.

In central Mozambique, cholera is affecting the districts of Mopeia and Alto Molocué, in Zambézia province, with a cumulative of 345 cases, and the district of Changara, in Tete province, with 54 cases, making a total of 3,587 cases countrywide...

Mozambique: Cholera outbreak declared again in Moma district

​Mozambican authorities have once again declared a cholera outbreak in Moma district, in the northern province of Nampula, after recording 36 cases over the past three weeks, it was announced on Wednesday.

Data released on Wednesday by Jaime Miguel, head of the public health department at the Provincial Health Directorate, indicate that between 3 and 21 September, Moma district recorded 36 cholera cases, of which 34 have already been discharged from hospital, while the remaining two patients remain hospitalised in local health units.​..

Cholera outbreak in Mozambique spikes with 12 deaths in 24 hours

Mozambique recorded 135 new cholera cases and 12 deaths within 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities since the current outbreak began in September to 48, with growing concern in Tete, official data shows.

According to the latest daily bulletin from the National Directorate of Public Health, covering data from 3 September to 28 January, out of a total of 3,449 cholera cases reported during this period, 1,576 were in Nampula province, with 19 deaths; 1,334 in Tete province, with 27 deaths; and 484 in Cabo Delgado province, with two deaths.

In the previous report, up to 27 January, there were 3,091 cholera cases in this outbreak, with 36 deaths nationwide.

On 28 January alone, Mozambique registered 135 new cholera cases, with 48 patients hospitalised and 87 treated on an outpatient basis.

The epicentre of the outbreak is now Tete province, in the central region of the country, where the fatality rate has more than doubled in recent days to 2%, with 87 new patients in 24 hours, according to the same data. The outbreak remains active in this province in the districts of Marara, Tsangano, Moatize, Changara, Cahora Bassa and Tete, as well as in Morrumbala district, in the neighbouring Zambézia province.

In the previous cholera outbreak, covering data from the National Directorate of Public Health between 17 October 2024 and 20 July 2025, there were 4,420 infections, of which 3,590 were in Nampula province, and a total of 64 deaths.

At least 169 people died from cholera in Mozambique in 2025, among around 40,000 cases, the Minister of Health reported on 10 December last year, urging communities to observe individual and collective hygiene measures.​..

​Maputo, 19 Feb (AIM) – Mozambique is no longer facing an outbreak of cholera, but an epidemic, the National Director of Public Health, Quinhas Fernandes, warned at a Maputo press conference on Thursday.

“The country has an epidemic. That’s clear because we have several outbreaks in several places”, said Fernandes. “The definition of an epidemic is when we have several outbreaks at the same time. So yes, we have an epidemic”.

From 3 October 2025 to 17 February this year, 5,661 cases of cholera were diagnosed. Fernandes said that 71 of these cases had died. Only 19 of the deaths took place in health units – 52 died in their communities,

The provinces worst hit are Nampula and Tete, with 2,445 and 2,141 cases respectively. Most of the cases diagnosed are in the northern and central provinces, but one case was diagnosed in the Maputo urban district of KaTembe, and one in Chicumbane, in the southern province of Gaza...

Mozambique recorded 63 new cholera cases in 24 hours, bringing the total to 7,326 infections in the current outbreak, which has resulted in 82 deaths since September, according to official data.

According to the latest bulletin on the disease’s progression, issued by the National Directorate of Public Health, and with data from 3 September to 9 March, of the 7,326 cases during this period, 3,207 were recorded in Nampula province, with a total of 38 deaths, and 2,625 in Tete, with 32 fatalities, as well as 1,006 in Cabo Delgado, which accounts for eight deaths.

On a smaller scale, the cumulative figures indicate 124 cases and one death in Zambézia province, 106 cases and two deaths in Manica, 256 cases and one death in Sofala, one case in Maputo city, and one in Gaza province.

In the 24 hours preceding the bulletin’s closure (9 March), 63 new cases were confirmed, with the overall case fatality rate in Mozambique remaining at 1.1%, and 54 people hospitalised, with no deaths reported in the past 72 hours. However, an outbreak was declared in the Doa district of Tete province.

In the previous outbreak in the country, between 17 October 2024 and 20 July 2025, 4,420 infections were recorded, of which 3,590 occurred in Nampula, resulting in 64 deaths. The current outbreak has already surpassed the number of cases and fatalities in a shorter period.
