Mozambique tightens health protocols amid measles outbreak, mpox risk

​Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday announced the reinforcement of surveillance measures in all health units across the country in response to a measles outbreak.

During the inauguration of a water supply system in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Nyusi addressed the ongoing public health crisis, highlighting the severity of the measles outbreak and the potential emergence of mpox.

The measles outbreak, which began on July 9, has predominantly affected Cabo Delgado with 170 cases reported there and eight in Niassa, leading to a total of 18 deaths, 17 of which occurred in Cabo Delgado.

“All deaths were recorded outside health units, which highlights the need to reinforce awareness about the importance of vaccination and early care,” said the president.

To combat the spread of measles, the Mozambican government, through the Ministry of Health, is implementing several measures, including training technical staff on case management and reinforcing routine vaccinations.​..

​The Mozambican Health authorities have detected outbreaks of measles in four districts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, warning that the outbreaks have been worsening over the last two months.

According to Edson Fernando, Chief Medical Officer in Cabo Delgado, the districts that have reported the disease are Ancuabe, Chiúre, Namuno and Montepuez, with a cumulative total of 340 cases, 68 of which required hospitalization.

He said that the rise in cases of measles in Cabo Delgado is a result of the inaccessibility of health facilities in some communities, especially in those regions where the Islamist terrorists have been launching attacks. This has led to many children not being vaccinated.​..

The health authorities in Sofala, in the centre of Mozambique, have declared a measles outbreak in the village of Nensa, in the district of Marromeu, after registering 33 cases of the disease, an official source announced.

“We have a cumulative total of 33 cases, all of which are outpatient cases. There have been no serious cases, no hospitalizations, and no deaths,” said Julieta Fernando, health director of the district of Marromeu, quoted by the media today.

31 people are known to have died of measles out of a total number of 1,191 cases diagnosed in central and northern Mozambique between 9 July and 28 January.

At a Friday press conference in Maputo, on the epidemiological situation in the country, the Deputy National Director of Public Health, Aleny Couto, said Nampula is currently the only province with an active measles outbreak. However, there have been no new cases notified in the previous 24 hours, and for the past 14 days there have been no measles deaths.

The measles cases were reported in Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula in the north, and in the central provinces of Zambezia and Sofala.

428 cases were diagnosed in Niassa, 351 in Nampula, 341 in Cabo Delgado, 42 in Sofala and 29 in Zambezia. Of the 31 known measles deaths, 17 were in Cabo Delgado, 11 in Nampula and three in Niassa.
