Mother Grieves Toddler's Swine Flu Related Death
Columbia, S.C. (WLTX) - There's heartache for a young mother after her daughter dies of complications from the H1N1 virus, but she's hoping her story can save others lives.
"If I could tell her anything, it would be, I would want her to come back home. But, it would be, I love you,"says Arkiea Jones.
She says she will never be able to tell her daughter, Solange Days, those precious words again. Solange died Sunday of complications from the H1N1 virus.
"It still seems like it's not really true. The thought that I'll never be able to see her again,"says Jones.
She says Solange was an energetic child. But two months ago, she noticed some unusual behavior.
"All she was doing was sleeping,"says Jones. Solange was admitted to a hospital. "They said that she had the regular flu,"says Jones.
Further tests confirmed the two-year-old had H1N1. "I was kind of worried because of hearing about so many people that have the virus,"says Jones.
If anyone could beat the virus, she says it would be Solange. She was born three months premature and had to spend her first months in the hospital.
"She was put on oxygen because her lungs were not fully developed,"says Jones.
She says her daughter was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and hypertension. But had learned to live with it, giving her optimism that she could beat this too.
But Solange lost her fight. Her mom blames herself. "It's very hard to know that there's something out there that you just can't protect your kids from,"says Jones.
Through family, friends and prayer, she says she'll get through this difficult time. "Just knowing that Solange is not struggling. She's not in pain or anything anymore,"says Jones.
Jones says she wants parents to be aware of their children, especially if they have a history of health problems and to get them vaccinated.
Visitation is Friday from 3 to 9 pm at J.P. Holley Funeral Home on Garners Ferry Road. The funeral is set for 1 pm Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church on Lower Richland Boulevard.
