The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Aït Taleb indicated yesterday, Monday June 6, 2022, in a plenary session in the House of Representatives that his department had drawn up a four-phase plan to fight against monkeypox, ensuring that this disease does not have the same ability to spread as Covid-19.
In response to a question on "the preventive measures taken against the spread of the monkeypox virus" during the weekly session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, the minister explained that the first phase of this plan consisted to train health professionals on how to diagnose and treat the disease.
The second, he added, concerns the process of diagnosing the disease in laboratories, noting in this regard that the Kingdom currently has four laboratories capable of diagnosing monkeypox.
Khalid Aït Taleb added that the third phase of this plan related to the management of suspected cases, while the fourth concerned the separation of infected people from their contacts.
The minister further clarified that if a person's infection is confirmed, the optimal method at the treatment stage is home isolation for a period of three weeks, and added that admission to a hospital only takes place in critical cases, when the patient is injured in the lungs, brain or eyes.
The monkeypox virus does not spread as easily as the coronavirus and the chain of transmission breaks quickly, explained the minister, who also stressed that there is no cure for this disease, whose virus disappears after three weeks of infection. He nevertheless insisted on the need to be vigilant.
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced the first confirmed case of monkeypox on June 2, and indicated that it was a case from a European country, detected in under the protocol established by Morocco since the launch of the global health alert.
The ministry had assured that the state of health of this patient was stable and did not cause concern, adding that he is under medical supervision in accordance with the health measures adopted in the matter.
