Monroe student has H1N1 flu virus

MONROE ? A case of the H1N1 virus, also called ?swine flu,? has been confirmed at Monroe Elementary School.
The student who was confirmed over the weekend with the flu will spend the next five days at home before being released by doctors, said Monroe Local Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli.
The child felt ill in school and his parents took him to the doctor, she said.
The district?s custodians went in and disinfected the areas where the student was Friday, Sept. 4, and have been instructed to disinfect each day when they clean, Lolli said.
?So far, it is the only case we have. The student is not a bus rider, so we did not have to re-disinfect the bus fleet,? she said.
Parents were notified Sunday, Sept. 6, through the district phone notification system so that they could talk with their children at home, Lolli said.
Teachers also reassured students as they returned to school Tuesday, Sept. 8, that everything is fine, but that if they feel like they have the flu to let their parents or the school nurse know, she said.
On Friday, the district sent a letter home with students that included recommendations on what to do if flu-like symptoms occur. Lolli said it is the second letter on the subject that has gone home to families of students.
In the message about H1N1, parents are told if their child has any symptoms of the flu including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, to keep him home from school and contact a health care provider so it can be determined if further testing is needed.
Guardians are also asked to include information about their child?s symptoms when calling a child in as absent due to illness and if the child has been tested specifically for H1N1, and the results.
