The high number of measles cases worries the authorities. Under what conditions could an epidemic be declared in the Republic of Moldova

In the Republic of Moldova, a state of epidemiological alert could be introduced if measles cases are registered in half of the country's districts. The statement was made for Teleradio Moldova by the deputy director of the National Agency for Public Health (ANSP), Veaceslav Guțu. Currently, the situation is worrying and the health authorities are making efforts to manage the existing outbreaks. The most affected by the spread of this virus are the municipality of Chisinau and the district of Sîngerei.

117 cases of measles, nine of which were imported, have been confirmed in the Republic of Moldova since the beginning of the year. Almost half of them - 55 in number - were registered in Chisinau, and 39 in Singerei district, in unvaccinated children, aged between 2 and 19 years. Another outbreak of measles was detected in the Străseni district, where six unvaccinated children fell ill.

"This figure is quite worrying because the Republic of Moldova, in general, recently registered very few cases. In 2023 we had three cases, in 2022-2021 there were practically no cases. The situation worsened especially in the European region, in European countries," the epidemiologist said.

The degree of immunization in the Republic of Moldova is below that recommended by the World Health Organization and is only 85 percent for children up to four years old, draws the attention of the specialist:.

"Every year between four and five thousand children do not benefit from vaccination against measles. So their number, from year to year, increases considerably, which means that there is a risk of measles outbreaks, especially in specific communities, where there are still more unvaccinated children", explained Veaceslav Guțu.

The increase in the number of illnesses could convince parents to vaccinate their children, claims the epidemiologist.

"Where there are already registered cases of measles, we also recommend that my colleagues in the health sector, primary care workers in particular, try to make every effort to manage these outbreaks, strictly monitor contacts, hospitalize cases that are already confirmed to have measles, to monitor the situation in the outbreak daily and of course to vaccinate", stated the deputy director of the ANSP.

Although the situation is worrying, the authorities say they have no grounds for declaring a state of epidemic for now. ANSP specialists remind the population that there is no specific treatment against measles, but the disease can be prevented by immunization, which is carried out free of charge.

Starting from May 5, 2024 and until now, more than 50 cases of the disease have been confirmed, and infected people are not vaccinated. According to the ANSP, a good part of the commune's children are not immunized against measles due to the parents' refusal to accept and administer the vaccine.
