Cold Spring Case Confirmed As Swine Flu

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)

Apr 30, 2009 9:12 am US/Central

Minnesota became the 12th state with a confirmed case of
swine flu on Thursday, with federal testing confirming the virus in a central Minnesota resident.

The Minnesota Department of Health said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case in a person with ties to Rocori Middle School in Cold Spring.

The middle school and a private elementary school next to it remained closed on Thursday. State officials planned a news conference in Cold Spring to discuss the case.

In announcing the probable case a day earlier, health officials said the person was expected to make a full recovery. They have not identified the person.

Child becomes first Minnesotan hospitalized with new swine flu

Associated Press
Last update: May 8, 2009 - 8:57 PM

Minnesota has had its first hospitalization from the new strain of swine flu -- a child who is now home and is expected to make a full recovery, officials from the Minnesota Department of Health said Friday. That was one of three new confirmed cases of the new swine flu virus identified today, bringing the total number in the state to 21.

The three newest cases of swine flu were all in the Twin Cities area.

Health officials say they expect to see more cases of what they're calling H1N1 novel influenza in communities across the state.

Health officials also will no longer distinguish between probable and confirmed testing as the health department's St. Paul laboratory is now able to test for the virus. Previously, the department needed to send probable samples to the CDC for final confirmation.
