Missouri health officials add up the H1N1 numbers

Fred Bodimer Reporting

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- It has been one year since the first H1N1 flu death in Mexico.

So how has Missouri handled the swine flu over the past twelve months?

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has confirmed 8 deaths in which the H1N1 flu virus was identified as a contributing factor.

"We know of 9 other deaths in which the flu was involved, but the virus was never confirmed by laboratory testing to be the H1N1 virus," said department spokesman Kit Wagar. "However, because the H1N1 flu is the dominant flu virus throughout the nation, these 9 deaths are probably associated with H1N1."

Re: Missouri health officials add up the H1N1 numbers

I'm going to adjust the Missouri total to include the 9 unconfirmed deaths for a total of 17.

Re: Missouri health officials add up the H1N1 numbers

The CDC has reported four pediatric deaths in Missouri through Week 48. I'm not sure if there have been any additional pediatric deaths, particularly in the nine deaths not confirmed as H1N1, because I'm pretty sure that all four reported pediatric deaths were confirmed H1N1 and among the eight confirmed deaths.
