Mississippi State University on the watch for swine flu

MSU on the WATCH for swine flu
The Clarion-Ledger ? August 6, 2009

With the fall academic semester getting ready to start, Mississippi State University is launching an awareness program to help prevent the spread of H1N1 virus, or swine flu.

Officials at the Starkville-based university have reported six H1N1 cases over the summer.

In response, the university?s Crisis Action Team and the Division of Student Affairs are sponsoring the Flu WATCH campaign to disseminate information about prevention. It is using door hangers and magnets in residence halls, posters and banners on campus, a Web site, shuttle-bus advertisements, and public service announcements on the campus radio and TV stations.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared H1N1 a pandemic. While there have been no deaths among the more than 300 cases in Mississippi, the CDC considers swine flu to be particularly dangerous because it differs from all other known flu viruses.

While an H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in the fall, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said swine flu probably will flare up before the vaccine arrives.

She also said there probably would not be enough of the flu vaccine for everyone, especially in the early stages of the flu season.

Re: Mississippi State University on the watch for swine flu

So they went from 6 cases a couple of weeks ago to 306 probable cases as of today. Just 4 days ago it was 160 probable cases.

I sent two of my kids off to Mississippi colleges on the 14th - neither are at MSU, but many close friends are. I gave both of mine big lectures on hand washing, etc. as I was dropping them off. They were both like..."OK, MOM!" - then my daughter called last night to say there are 2 probable cases at her school - she was like "How did you know this was really gonna happen?"

She also said that her school has signs posted everywhere - on every door to each building/dorm, etc...that say "WASH YOUR HANDS!!!" - so now she doesn't think I am such a woowoo :)
