JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Stylists are no longer leaving the hair on the floor. They are boxing it up in hopes of helping with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Raymond Vaughn, owner of Raymond's on Old Canton Road in Jackson said Wednesday at least six other local salons are collecting hair for the cause. They are Noggins, Switzer's Salon, Wave Length, The Ritz, Allure Salon and Joni's.
"Hair is very absorbent when it comes to oils. That's the reason we shampoo our hair because it attracts oil. We will be taking hair from here and other salons down to the Gulf of Mexico where they'll build them into booms for clean-up and also mats for clean up," said Vaughn.
Vaughn said 300,000 pounds of hair are cut each day in the United States.
Vaughn will be delivering the clips to the Gulf Coast Saturday morning.
Any salon or pet groomers wanting to participate are welcome to bring their hair donations by Friday afternoon, and Vaughn said he would deliver them. The contact information is Raymond's, 5743 Old Canton Rd, Jackson. The phone number is 601-956-8161
