Ministry: 4 dead after vaccination against A (H1N1), 3 of them unrelated to vaccine
The Ministry of Health of China said here Tuesday that four deaths have been reported after receiving the vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) made in China and confirmed that three of them are unrelated to the vaccine.
The three deaths were "coincidences" and the cause of another death has not been discovered, said in a press conference Liang Wannian, director of the emergency response office of the ministry.
Of the 26.18 million people around the country who had been vaccinated until Monday have been reported 2867 suspected adverse reactions, said Liang. Around four fifths of the reactions were fever or dizziness.
"The evidence and clinical practice in China and elsewhere have shown that vaccines against influenza A (H1N1) are safe," Liang said.
Through Sunday, the Chinese mainland had reported 178 deaths from the flu. More than 90,000 people were infected and nearly 80 percent have recovered.
Liang warned that the flu situation in China remains "grave" with a greater number of deaths and more districts and municipalities reporting confirmed cases.
The proportion of influenza A (H1N1) also increased sharply by about 90 percent of all cases of influenza in recent weeks.
Liang said that schools are still the main point for prevention. (Xinhua)
