Milwaukee adult dies from swine flu

By Sharif Durhams of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Jun. 4, 2009 12:04 p.m.

A Milwaukee adult has died from swine flu.

It's the first reported death from the H1N1 virus in Wisconsin.

City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker announced the death at a noon news conference. Twenty-one people in the U.S. had died from the H1N1 virus as of Wednesday, including four in the Chicago area, according to news reports.

Baker said the person died at a Milwaukee-area hospital but would not provide additional identifying information, including the name of the hospital, the age and the sex of the person. Baker said the person had a common underlying medical condition that contributed to the person's illness.

"We believe all of our local hospitals will take appropriate precautions to protect their patients from the H1N1 virus, Baker said.

Wisconsin health officer Seth Foldy said the state has 2,074 confirmed and probable cases of the H1N1 virus.

We will post more details as they become available.

Wisconsin endures first swine flu death

MILWAUKEE, June 5 (UPI)

State and local health officials in Wisconsin say the state has confirmed its first death as a result of swine flu.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Friday that while specific details regarding the H1N1 influenza fatality were not released, officials confirmed the victim was a Milwaukee resident who also had a medical condition that intensified their illness.

"We express our condolences for the affected family here," Wisconsin health officer Seth Foldy said of the recent fatality.

"What is unusual today is not that there has been a death from influenza. Over 37,000 people die in the United States each year of seasonal influenza, and the rates of death and illness from this novel H1N1 strain does not appear to be radically different," said Foldy.

"What is unusual this year is that influenza continues to be widely circulating in Wisconsin and many, many other states this late in the year."

Wisconsin currently tops all U.S. states with 2,071 confirmed cases of swine flu. The state also has three probable cases, the Journal Sentinel said.

The newspaper said the U.S. total for confirmed swine flu cases sat at 11,054 as of Wednesday.

Milwaukee Health Dept. reports second death from swine flu
Second death reported on day first flu victim is laid to rest

Staff Writer

WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Health Department tells FOX6 News it has confirmed the city's and the state's second death from swine flu. Officials will only say the second fataility is an adult who apparently did not have any common underlying medical conditions that typically make people more at risk for influenza complications.

City Health Commissioner Bevan Baker says conditions that increase a person's risk include being older than 65 or under 5, pregnancy, heart or lung problems, a compromised immune system and diabetes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday 45 deaths have been reported nationwide.

The news of this second death comes on the same day the first person who died from swine flu in Milwaukee is laid to rest.

FOX6 is the only TV station to talk with that woman's family. 27-year-old Andrea Morgan died June 3rd. The family tells FOX6, a hospital autopsy reveals she died from swine flu.
More from the FOX6 News team and Bob Moore.

Re: Milwaukee adult dies from swine flu

I am confused. Tiara Mosely-Forest and Barbara Davis were two other Milwaukee deaths.
That would make Andrea Morgan number 3, would it not?

Is there another death in addition to that?

Re: Milwaukee adult dies from swine flu

sorry, I don't mean to be confusing. that article was just to get a source reference for Andrea Morgan's identity for our database. there are currently 4 people dead in Milwaukee. This is the list of fatalities we have for Wisconsin:
