Due to reports of widespread Influenza A in the area, health care officials are recommending that health care and nursing home facilities be closed to visitors.
"This is our most significant means of preventing initial spread to the facility, spread within the facility, and spread from the facility to the outside community," Dr. Chris Pogliano from the Grand View Hospital wrote in a March 31 letter to area medical care and nursing home facilities, as well as GVH doctors, emergency room, and other medical officials.
He noted "some documented cases of Infuenza A, not only in the communities, but also in local nursing homes."
Dr. Gail Shebuski and health officer Guy St. Germain from the Western U.P. Health Department also noted the early stages of an Influenza A outbreak and recommended that visitors be barred from the facilities at this time.
"We have had several admissions to the hospital with complications of Influenza A, including alterations of mental status, pneumonia and relative debilitation," Pogliano said.
Grand View public relations director Kelly Marczak said two people had been admitted to the hospital over the past few of days because of the flu, and "we are seeing a few cases in the emergency room." Those people have been treated and released, she said.
Marczak said that because this flu outbreak is "a little later than normal. We want to make people aware the flu is hitting the area right now."
She advises people to "take precautions -- avoid crowed public areas if you're not feeling well. Limit visits to anyone in the hospital. Stay hydrated, and wash your hands to avoid spreading germs. That is very important in the schools."
