Mexico registers an excess mortality of 758 thousand 826 people in a pandemic
The Inegi pointed out that the highest incidence occurred in men, with a total of one million 416 thousand 564 deaths.
Mexico has had an excess mortality of 758,826 people from January 2020 to March 2022, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported on Monday.
The autonomous body documented 2 million 437 thousand 629 deaths from all causes in that period, 45.2% more than expected in the same period, when it was estimated that there would be one million 678 thousand 803 deaths, according to a model of endemic channels based on the history of deaths that occurred between 2015 and 2019.
The highest incidence occurred in men, with a total of one million 416 thousand 564 deaths, so the excess mortality was 472 thousand 974, 50.12% more than the expected deaths.
Meanwhile, in women there were one million 019 thousand 827 deaths, so the excess mortality was 284 thousand 155, 38.63% higher than estimated.
The entities with the highest excess mortality were Mexico City, the State of Mexico and Tlaxcala, with a level of more than 57%.
The Inegi data is a reflection of the impact of Covid-19 in Mexico, which accumulates more than 7 million cases and almost 330 thousand deaths from the disease, the fifth highest number of deaths in the world.
Even so, the autonomous body preliminarily recorded 255,448 deaths from all causes in the first quarter of the year, which represents a decrease of 117,678 compared to those registered in the same period of 2021.
The death rate registered from January to March was 19.9 per 10,000 inhabitants, a decrease of almost 10 points compared to the 2021 period, when it was 29.3 during one of the most acute stages of the pandemic in Mexico.
But the death rate is still higher than the pre-pandemic stage of 2019, when there were 16.1 deaths per 10,000 people in the first quarter of the year.
In the first quarter of the year, 57.1% of registered deaths corresponded to men, while 42.8% to women with the rest of unidentified sex.
The highest percentage of deaths, 62.5%, occurred in people over 64 years of age, although in all age groups higher mortality is observed among men, according to the Inegi.
