Maternal death rises influenza

Influenza A H1N1 has not only contributed to the high maternal mortality in Mexico, but is already responsible for one in ten deaths during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
In a notice to the Department of Epidemiology posted to the epidemiological surveillance units in the country on 10 September, warned about the risks of complications and death in pregnant women are asked what preventive measures to strengthen this sector population.
"The increase in maternal deaths from influenza or pneumonia were observed from April and since then there have been an average of nine deaths per month," says the notice.
Among the non-obstetric causes that have contributed to mortality, highlights Influenza-Pneumonia, which has been observed as the underlying cause in 10.3 percent of deaths (maternal) reported, compared with 2007 and 2008 represented only 2.5 per percent and 2.9 percent respectively.
The states where it occurs in most of these deaths are Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Distrito Federal, Chiapas, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacan, Yucatan, and especially the state of Mexico, which has seen 17 deaths so far, while who recorded four in 2008 and one in 2007, says the document says.
Until 19 August the country had recorded 683 maternal deaths, in contrast to the figure for the same period last year where 661 deaths were reported.
