(CNN) -- A flight from Mexico was held at a Colorado airport after a 23-month-old child onboard was reported sick, a Frontier Airlines spokeswoman said.

Frontier's Flight 64 from Puerto Vallarta landed at the Denver International Airport on Saturday afternoon.

"Paramedics boarded the flight and have assessed the child and taken the child to a local hospital," said airline spokeswoman Lindsey Purves.

Health officials interviewed the child's family and allowed other passengers to deplane using stairs instead of the jetway, said Jeff Dimond of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC asked passengers to fill out contact information, Purves said.

Denver health officials told CNN television affiliate KUSA that preliminary reports indicate the infant may have hand, foot and mouth disease.

The plane was evacuated when it arrived, and hospital paramedics on staff at the airport examined the children. But the youngsters and family were permitted to go without anyone visiting the hospital, said spokeswoman Betty Rueda.

?The family refused treatment, and there were not enough symptoms presented for our paramedics to intervene from a public health concern,? Rueda said.

Airport spokesman Jeff Green said initial information from the plane before it arrived was that there was a sick 2-year-old child aboard with a possibly contagious disease, and the crew asked for medical personnel to meet the aircraft.

But Rueda said there turned out to be two possible sick children with HFMD symptoms. She said she did not know the gender of the children or the nationality of the family...
