THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) office-bearers have said that measles is spreading in the capital district.

Addressing a news conference here on Monday, IAP Thiruvananthapuram Chapter office-bearers Dr Santhosh Kumar and Dr Bennet Xylo said that this year, till February, 40 measles cases were reported among children in the district.

They said that of late, Malayalis had developed a tendency to give up primary and customary vaccines and go for new generation vaccines paving way for the revisit of epidemics such as measles.

In the past, vaccines were administered against measles when the babies turned ninemonth- old as part of the National Immunisation Programme.

In 2004, there were 219 measles cases in the district, they said. In 2005, the number of cases rose to 514, but declined to 392 in 2006.

Following preventive measures, the number declined to 176 in 2007. But, it again climbed to 482 and 324 in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

In Malappuram, Kozhikode and Palakkad, similar number of measles cases were reported...
