The discovery, which comes as millions of birds begin moving toward the region in the fall migration, gave ammunition to groups that have insisted the government has overstated clean-up progress, and could force reclosure of key fishing areas only recently reopened.

The oil was sighted in West Bay, which covers approximately 35 square miles of open water between Southwest Pass, the main shipping channel of the river, and Tiger Pass near Venice. Boat captains working the BP clean-up effort said they have been reporting large areas of surface oil off the delta for more than a week but have seen little response from BP or the Coast Guard, which is in charge of the clean-up. The captains said most of their sightings have occurred during stretches of calm weather, similar to what the area has experienced most of this week.

Coast Guard says substance found floating in Gulf is algae, not oil

Published: Saturday, October 23, 2010, 7:22 PM Updated: Saturday, October 23, 2010, 8:15 PM

Excerpt:

Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said a Coast Guard pollution investigator has collected samples near the mouth of Tiger Pass and, while those samples need to be tested in a lab, "based on his observation and what he sees in the sample jars, he believes that to be an algal bloom."
...

However, boat captains working in the BP oil spill response team who first reported the sightings as oil said Saturday they were not convinced by the Coast Guard's initial assessment.

"I've never seen algae that looked orange, that was sticky, smelled like oil and that stuck to the boat and had to be cleaned off with solvent," said one captain, who like the others wished to remain anonymous for fear of losing their BP contracts. "I'll wait for the lab reports. In fact, we're also sending some samples off."

Ok, I have seen the pictures and I have lived in Florida for more than 25 years. I know what algae looks like and I have seen some pictures that look like oil floating on the ocean.

I would also like to say thank you to all of our volunteers who are following this and other threats to public health all over the world. :applause:

FluTrackers is an independent site operated by volunteers. We will continue to search for and publish the truth to the best of our ability.

We are not perfect. Many of us are self trained and posting about the areas other than our formal training.

But we have heart. And we will not let you down.

We will "call it as we see it".

I urge all governments to be open and honest about the health threats in their locations. This is 2010. We are in the digital age. Many have cell phone cameras. There is email, texting, and all manner of internet sites.

The truth will prevail.

Let us not repeat the history of the smooth slide into enslaving our minds.

Despite Heavy Oil, Louisiana Keeps Fisheries Open

By Dahr Jamail

NEW ORLEANS, Oct 26, 2010 (IPS) - Massive slicks of weathered oil were clearly visible near Louisiana's fragile marshlands in both the East and West Bays of the Mississippi River Delta during an overflight that included an IPS reporter on Oct. 23. The problem is that, despite this, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has left much of the area open for fishing.

Four days prior, on Oct. 19, federal on-scene cleanup coordinator for the BP oil disaster, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft, declared there was little recoverable surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

Both bays cover an area of roughly 112 square kilometres of open water that surround the Southwest Pass, the main shipping channel of the Mississippi River. While East Bay remains closed for fishing, West Bay was open for fishing when IPS spotted the oil on Oct. 23, despite the fact that the day before a BP oil cleanup crew had reported oil in West Bay to a local newspaper.

"They are literally shrimping in oil," Jonathan Henderson, the Coastal Resiliency Organiser for the environmental group Gulf Restoration Network, who was also on the flight, exclaimed as our plane flew over shrimpers trawling in the oil-covered area.

Definitely algae, not oil, scientists conclude of Gulf substance

Published: Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 6:00 PM

Louisiana State University scientists concluded Wednesday that the orange substance that spread across miles of the near-shore Gulf of Mexico last week was algae containing only trace amounts of hydrocarbons from routine surface pollution, not the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
...

The samples analyzed by LSU were collected by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries from the mouth of Tiger Pass, the agency said. Boaters who traveled through the material last week said that at times it spread from 10 miles off the mouth of Southwest Pass deep into West Bay, which lies between Southwest and Tiger passes.

Re: Massive stretches of weathered oil spotted in Gulf of Mexico

Thank you Pathfinder.

I trust the fishermans' observations, who have been fishing in these waters for decades.

I also think we need to know the source of funding of all scientists and experts who publish opinions.

We know from vaccine issues that there is money flowing on all sides.

"Follow the money."
