'Bug' Forces School To Close, Others Affected

POSTED: 8:51 am EST March 8, 2006
UPDATED: 9:05 am EST March 8, 2006

<!--startindex-->BALTIMORE -- A mixed bag of colds, coughs and viruses are making the rounds and no one is exempt, including the students at one Mount Washington school.

WBAL-TV 11 News education reporter Tim Tooten said this bug is hitting hard at home and at school. Tooten said it has gotten so bad that administrators had to shut the doors at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart School.

Tooten reported that some students were complaining of headaches and some were complaining of sore throats. He said it only got worse for the school and that's why the campus of a 166 students was off limits.

Tooten reported the flu-like bug hit so fast that administrators had little time to post a sign on the front door announcing no school. Linda Brass, a school employee, is among those who are not sick and she's keeping watch until students and staff can come back.

"We had 27 students out sick and although we had one teacher at home ill, we have four more including the principal that was not feeling well," Brass said. "So we decided we should close and sanitize the school today."

Tooten said the school custodian has been making the rounds -- spraying, cleaning, and doing lots of wiping down. First-grade teacher Sister Jean Marie Hobbs said she could tell something was in the air.

"Yes, I did because some of the students have been out with the stomach virus, bad coughs and sniffles now the fevers are starting," Hobbs said.
Catholic school officials said administrators could make the final call when it comes to closing down due to illness. They are just hoping healing will come quickly.

"It's quiet. It's too quiet here," Brass said. "I do miss my little friends."

Tooten reported students wouldn't have to make up the missed day. He said it was already on the school calendar as a snow day.

He said the bug has also hit a number of other Maryland school districts, but not severe enough to close buildings.

Let me guess the symptoms of this flu-like illness: diarrea; vomiting; headache and fever. ;-)
