Many Finns Reluctant to Get H1N1 Vaccine

Fewer than half of Finns have received the swine flu shot. Many municipalities are entering the final stretch to provide the vaccine to residents.
A couple months ago, health centres relied on security to handle the crowds of people queuing for the H1N1 flu shot. The situation is far calmer now at health centres across the country.
On Wednesday, 26-year-old Antero Suominen showed up for the vaccine in Kerava, southern Finland.
?My mother pressured me into coming to get the shot,? he admits.
Only around 45 percent of residents in Kerava have taken the jab so far.
The number is similar at health centres throughout the country.
Workers Steering Clear of the Jab
Senior Medical Officer Terhi Kilpi at the National Institute for Health and
Welfare says the turnout is surprisingly low.
?Those who haven?t taken the shot are mostly healthy people of working age who do not belong to any risk group,? she says.
So far over four million H1N1 vaccine doses have arrived in Finland. Over one million more are on the way.
Kilpi says she hopes as many people as possible get the shot before the end of March. A new wave of swine flu is expected by next winter at the latest. She adds that people who avoid the vaccine can put others at risk.
?A high number of unvaccinated people increases the risk of a more virulent epidemic. Next winter the virus could, for instance, be particularly hard on young people, especially those who are not vaccinated. Now is the time to get the shot,? she says.
