Mangalore: Suspected chikungunya cases sound warning bell

As of now, there is no need to be alarmed as nothing has been proved yet. They are only suspected cases, says MCC medical officer Dr Shivaram Shetty. The patients have symptoms of chikungunya, but it can be confirmed only after receiving the reports from the virology centre in Pune.
The blood samples were sent about a month and a half ago. It normally takes about three months for the reports to come from the Pune centre.
The persons suspected to be suffering from fever are Chittaranjan, Veena, Preethi D Pai and Seema K Pai, residents of Car Street area.
Chittaranjan and Veena are the labourers from North Karnataka and working as domestic help in a house in Car Street. However, all the patients are said to be recovering.
Dr Ramesh Pai, who treated them, told The Times of India that the cases were suspected as chikungunya as there was no testing facility either in Mangalore or in Bangalore. Blood samples have to be sent to Pune. The cases were suspected going by the symptoms during a clinical presentation, he said.
Though the number of suspected chikungunya cases are increasing, the officials are not in a position to say whether the city is slowly getting prone to the disease caused by mosquitoes because of the absence of testing facilities.
The city corporation is taking all precautionary measures like those in areas where chikungunya is prevailing, Dr Shetty said. Regular spray of medicine and fogging is being conducted in different parts of the city. Also, the health section officials are visiting the areas suspected area and educating the people.
