Mali: AVIAN INFLUENZA IN MALI: 30,000 POULTRY KILLED BY THE H5N1 STRAIN
May 3, 2021

Poultry_avarieThe presence of avian flu in Sikasso, Kati and Bamako in recent days has killed more than 30,000 poultry. The strain discovered in Mali is of the H5N1 type, explains the national directorate of veterinary services, which indicates that the source of introduction of the disease is not known.

In a statement released last week, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries said cases of bird flu have been recorded in poultry farms in Kati, Sikasso and Bamako district. According to the ministry, the existence of the disease has been confirmed following high mortalities of poultry in these localities. However, the department reassures that arrangements have been made for the response.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, approached by Studio Tamani, these investigations were carried out by the national directorate of veterinary services and the veterinary laboratory in Bamako. Thus, precautionary measures have been taken, in particular the quarantine of the farms concerned, the disinfection of premises and livestock equipment. In addition to these provisions, there is the destruction of corpses, by incineration and burial, as well as health monitoring.

The ministry explains that an emergency plan has been drawn up and is being implemented. In addition, two teams were deployed to the veterinary services of Koulikoro, Sikasso and the district of Bamako. Objective: "to support these structures in the response through the correct application of the emergency plan reminds the department, which does not give details on the type of virus".

"Do not panic", affirm the veterinary services which reassure that "the situation is under control". According to Dr Boubacar Kanout? deputy national director of veterinary services, the strain discovered in Mali is of the H5N1 type. It killed 30,000 poultry explains the national directorate of veterinary services. The veterinary services specify, however, that the source of the disease's introduction is not known even though outbreaks were reported in Senegal last January.
And Dr Kanout? adds: "The situation is very well under control. All the farms that have been the subject of this disease are already under close surveillance by the veterinary services. So the products from his farms do not go out to the markets. Our concern is to find out whether, beyond its farms, other farms are affected that we do not know. This is the work that is in progress. We can assure the people that there are no poultry products from these farms in the markets. "

However, in Kati, says Studio Tamani, poultry sellers and resellers reject this information of the presence of avian flu in Mali. According to them, the chickens are currently in good health and do not suffer from any disease. But some of them remember that a few months ago poultry farmers lost a lot of poultry due to the change in temperature.

The authorities invite the populations not to handle and eat sick birds, as well as poultry corpses. A call was also made to professionals in the sector to report any mortality to the veterinary services.
