H1N1 CRISIS: 26 warded nationwide in five hospitals

KUALA LUMPUR, Tues:

Twenty-six people were warded today at five hospitals nationwide to ascertain if they were victims of Influenza A (H1N1) infection. So far, only 16 were cleared while the rest were placed under isolation, pending their sample results from the Institute for Medical Research.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican they will continue taking all precautionary measures as long as there was spread of the disease worldwide.

Until 8am, seven more countries reported 11 confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1)- Bahamas, Bolivia, Jamaica, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Hungary, bringing the total countries with notified cases to 63. Till Tuesday, there are 17,582 confirmed cases with 115 deaths.

Dr Ismail said with the virus still spreading, it was important for people to be still on high alert and adhere to personal hygiene including covering nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing and washing hands often with soap and water.

?People who suffer from flu should confine themselves to their homes, if possible, or wear face masks to prevent others being infected when in public or crowded places.
Malaysia is still free from Influenza A (H1N1) as there is no local transmission of the disease.

Since April, the ministry received 371 notified cases of people showing symptoms of the disease but only two were found positive.

Dr Ismail said four people who came in contact with a positive case in Hong Kong are under home quarantine while six who came in contact with the Singaporean woman were released yesterday after they were given the clean bill of health.

Between April and Sunday, health authorities screened 306,631 people who entered the country via air, sea or land.

H1N1 PANDEMIC: Quarantine is just a precaution, public told

Several tourists and locals have been quarantined at their hotel rooms and

homes in several parts of the state as a precautionary measure due to the H1N1 virus.
However, the State Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said there was nothing to be worried about.

?Many of those who had been quarantined previously were allowed to return to their homes after it was confirmed that they were not infected with the H1N1 virus. So this is only a precautionary measure,? he said when contacted yesterday.

He declined to confirm the number of people who have been quarantined
saying that the number was ?small?.
He said the state Health Department was keeping a close watch on tourists and locals who came from abroad, and if they showed symptoms such as high fever, they would be immediately put under close observation.

Hoh said the authorities were being put on full alert at all entry points and the residents should not panic as there has not been any confirmed case in the state.

In Johor Baru, Johor is still free of the H1N1 virus although two new cases of suspected influenza A were recorded here yesterday.

However, after the patients were admitted to the Crisis and Preparedness Operations Room of the Johor Health Department, it turned out to be a

false alarm.

State Health Director Dr Mohd Khairi Yakub assured the public that the department was monitoring the H1N1 virus in the state to make sure that the situation was under control.

Until yesterday, there has been 30 suspected cases at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (SAH). Of this, 29 have been certified to be free from the

H1N1 virus with one more case awaiting the test results from the laboratory.

The patient, 23, had complained of sore throat and fever after returning from the United Kingdom. He is currently being quarantined at

the SAH.

Asked if there was any increase in respiratory problem cases, Dr Mohd Khairi replied in the negative.

?Before the school holidays, only 0.92 per cent of patients had respiratory problems.

The number dropped to 0.6 and 0.3 before registering at 0.6 yesterday.

?The patients are only suffering from normal virus, possibly caused by the haze so there is nothing to worry about,? he said.
