When Amirnuddin Jamaluddin, 47, had muscle aches in his legs, he only thought that he was tired from mowing the lawn.

A few hours later, the immigration officer felt feverish and applied for medical leave to rest at home.

Little did he realise that after three days of having the fever, he had to spent another week at the Johor Specialist Hospital after being diagnosed as a dengue patient.

?I was shocked when I saw rashes around my arms after the doctor examined my blood pressure,? he said, adding that he was still reeling from the effects of dengue fever.

The unfortunate victim who has resided in Kampung Melayu for more than 30 years added that he only knew something was wrong when a masseur noticed the rashes on his back.

Amirnuddin is one of five residents from his housing estate who contracted the disease.

Another victim was his neighbour Rohani Bakar, 47, a mother of three.

?My situation was so bad that they put me on drips as I could not eat or drink anything.
?However, because of constant support from family and friends, I was able to force myself to eat. Doctors had advised me that I will recover soon if I was able to produce enough antibodies.?

Rohani said she was fearful for her family?s health as she was not sure of the source of the dengue fever.

Retired teacher Abdul Ghafar Abu Bakar, 64, said he initially thought he was suffering from food poisoning.

?I never imagined I could come down with dengue fever as I had been living here for a long time,? he said, adding that he has since warned his children to be careful and to use mosquito repellents often.

When contacted, Johor Baru City Council public relations officer Lokman Sulaiman said he would take this matter seriously and work together with the Health Department to eradicate this situation.

?We will monitor the situation and will inspect homes,? he said, adding that workers would be deployed to fog the area.
