Malawi: Two cases of cholera confirmed in Lilongwe and Balaka

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi)APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) December 17, 2025 | 1:12 PM

Health authorities in Malawi have confirmed two new cases of cholera and are urging the population to strengthen prevention measures to avoid the spread of the disease.

Malawi's Ministry of Health and Sanitation has confirmed two cases of cholera in the districts of Lilongwe and Balaka, urging the population to adopt preventative measures to stop the spread of the disease.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Bestone Chisamile, indicated that the first case involves a five-year-old child from Ward 24 in Lilongwe, admitted to Bwaila Hospital on December 5. The second case is that of a 42-year-old man from the traditional chiefdom of Kalembo, in the Balaka district, who was treated at the local health center on December 8.

Health authorities have urged citizens to drink clean water, wash their hands regularly with soap, and promptly report any suspected cases. " Report any suspected case of cholera immediately to the nearest health center so that it can be treated ," Mr. Chisamile emphasized.

The official also assured that healthcare facilities have the necessary stocks to deal with any additional cases.

Malawi regularly faces cholera outbreaks. The most recent, occurring between 2022 and 2023, was the deadliest in decades, with over 1,700 deaths. Health experts attribute these recurring outbreaks to inadequate sanitation, contaminated water sources, and flooding caused by tropical storms, which facilitate the spread of the disease.
