Salmonella sickens, claims life at Quarry Hill

Patients at Quarry Hill, a retirement and assisted living community in Camden, have been sickened by the bacteria salmonella, with one dying following hospitalization.
Seven Quarry Hill residents have suffered from salmonelliosis, said Dr. Stephen Sears, acting director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Two have been hospitalized, said Christopher Burke, director of marketing and communications for Pen Bay Healthcare, on Feb. 8.
"The patient who died declined treatment prior to being admitted to the hospital," said Burke.
The salmonelliosis outbreak occurred between Jan. 25 and Feb. 4, he said.
The second patient who was hospitalized has recovered. There have been no new cases as of Feb. 8, said Burke.
The origin of salmonella at Quarry Hill has not been determined, said Sears.
