Authorities of Sassoon General Hospital on Tuesday reported a death due to cholera. One Querishi, of Khadki, after seeking treatment at two hospitals, died within an hour of admission to Sassoon, doctors said.



There has not been a death from cholera reported in many years, said the doctors, adding that in all likelihood, there was a delay in getting treatment in the initial stages. ?He had a feeble pulse and was brought in a state of shock, said Dr D G Kulkarni, medical superintendent, Sassoon General Hospital. Response is immediate in case of treatment for cholera by restoring IV fluids. We tried to save him but he died within an hour of being admitted here,? Kulkarni said. He had clinical symptoms of profuse diarhoea and vomiting.



Another patient ? a 38-year-old man who was admitted to a private hospital for treating cholera like symptoms, also sought admission later to Sassoon General Hospital. ?He too had similar cholera-like symptoms and we were able to treat him in time,? said Kulkarni.

Cholera cases on the rise at Kasturba, municipality mum

While the municipal corporation has kept mum about the cholera cases in the city, patients testing positive for the infectious disease and being admitted to Kasturba Hospital are increasing.

Ward no 15 of Kasturba Hospital, the city?s only infectious disease hospital, has been reserved for cholera, severe diarrhoea and hepatitis patients.

According to a nurse in charge of the ward, 60% of the patients in the ward has tested positive for hanging drop test, the primary test for cholera.

?None of these cases are classic cholera, which is deadly. Many times, the mild cholera goes undetected as they are not tested. But a majority of cases in the out-patient department is of stomach ailments. Byculla and Mohammed Ali Road, Bandra, Kurla are the worst-affected areas,? said the doctor.

While there is a rising number of cholera and severe diarrhoea cases, the hospital?s infrastructure is not able to handle the load.

?Seventy-two patients have severe diarrhoea symptoms. The ward has only two toilets,? said Arif Sheikh, 25, a Byculla resident admitted to hospital on Saturday.

Cholera scare keeps BMC on toes

A day after DNA reported about the rising number of positive cases of hanging drop test, the BMC?s hydraulic department collected water samples from the areas where patients admitted to Kasturba Hospital live.

Mohammed Hussein Virani, 60, a cholera patient was discharged from Kasturba Hospital on Tuesday. ?BMC officials and Bhabha Hospital employees came to our house to collect water samples,? he said.

?We took the water samples on July 27. In E-ward (Byculla is part of E Ward), 10 samples were taken. Two samples tested positive for e coli,? said Bambale.
