Macedonia hit by Mumps epidemic

Since the beginning of 2009, 1.085 persons infected with the mumps virus have been registered in Macedonia. Most of them are registered in Skopje - 288, in Kavadarci - 160 and in Prilep - 137, the Institute for Health Protection (RZZZ) informs.

RZZZ and the Viral Diseases Commission recommend epidemic surveillance measures to be heightened, new patients infected with mumps to be constantly registered in order to be isolated and treated adequately and the population to receive appropriate heath education, especially pupils and students.

The number of mumps patients in Macedonia began increasing in late 2007. In the course of 2008, 12 epidemics of viral mumps were reported in Veles, Kocani, Vinica, Strumica, Kriva Palanka, Kumanovo, Kavadraci, Sveti Nikole, Probistip, Radovis, Valandovo and Skopje.

A total of 5.913 persons infected with mumps were registered by the end of 2008, which is the biggest number of registered cases in the past 25 years.

Emergency vaccination against mumps

Skopje /02/02/ 10:44

An extraordinary immunization against mumps begins Monday at all health-care institutions across Macedonia.

Under-immunized kids with age 15-19 will undergo vaccination, Ministry of Health said, adding that kids who received one-dose of MMR will also undergo vaccination.

There is no need for re-vaccination of kids who had already received two dozes of mumps vaccine, as two dozes of the vaccine are enough to prevent the outbreak.

The teens still needing immunizations are encouraged to get the mumps vaccine to prevent a reoccurrence of a mumps outbreak. The kids still needing the recommended two doses of the mumps vaccine need to contact their local care provider. Two doses of the mumps vaccine is the cornerstone mumps prevention.

A total of 1.444 mumps cases have been confirmed in Macedonia since January 1, among them 30 kids have been hospitalized.

Macedonia Mumps Epidemic Tops 2,000 Cases
Skopje | 06 February 2009 |

Another 135 cases of mumps were registered in Macedonia on Thursday, raising the total number of infected to over 2,000 across the country, the Health Ministry said.

Ten of the newly-infected patients had to be hospitalized due to the severity of their condition. Around 50 patients, mainly children, have been hospitalized in total.

Earlier this week, health authorities kicked off an emergency mass vaccination campaign to deal with the outbreak, aimed at all children aged 15-19 that had not been vaccinated before.

Some parents asked for schools to shut down provisionally until the outbreak is contained, but authorities have not reached a formal decision yet.

Mumps is a viral infectious disease that mainly attacks children. It is spread from person to person through contact with respiratory secretions such as saliva, but can also be spread by sharing food, drinks, and kissing. Symptoms including swelling of the glands close to the jaw, fever, headache and muscle ache.

Mumps is considered a mild to moderate disease, but carries the risk of complications including hearing loss, meningitis, sterility in men and spontaneous miscarriage.
