Avian flu: update of the epidemiological situation

Communicated 16.02.2023

On February 15, 2023, a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 type virus) was confirmed in a great egret in the town of Wincrange.

Given that the avian influenza virus is widely present in wild birds in the Grand Duchy and in our neighboring countries, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration reminds poultry owners that it is imperative to protect domestic poultry against any contact with wild birds.

In order to prevent the spread of this highly pathogenic virus and the appearance of new outbreaks, since December 2022, the following preventive biosecurity measures have been put in place:

Feeding and watering must take place in premises that are not accessible to wild birds;
Poultry must be kept in closed rooms;
Poultry may have access to exit areas provided that these are protected by netting to avoid any contact with wild birds;
Biosecurity rules must be scrupulously respected;
Gatherings of poultry (poultry shows) are prohibited;
Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian.
The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration insists that all poultry imports must be health certified (TRACES) by an official veterinarian of the country of origin. This obligation also applies to the purchase of poultry on a market.

In the event of the discovery of a dead or sick aquatic wild bird (goose, duck, swan), the latter must be reported to the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (tel.: 247-82539, e-mail: info@alva . state.lu) .

Depending on the evolution of the disease, the measures will be updated.

Consumption of eggs and poultry meat poses no risk to public health.

Avian flu: three new cases have been confirmed

Communicated 15.05.2023

As of May 15, 2023, three cases of avian flu (virus type H5N1) have been confirmed in a common tern ( Flussseeschwalbe ) respectively two black-headed gulls ( Lachmöwe ) in Remerschen.

In order to avoid the introduction of this highly pathogenic virus into poultry flocks, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration strongly recommends that the following preventive measures be observed:

  • Biosecurity rules must be scrupulously respected.
  • It is strongly recommended to feed and water poultry inside buildings.
  • Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian.
  • All poultry imports must be certified (TRACES) by an official veterinarian of the country of origin. This obligation also applies to the purchase of poultry on a market.
If a dead or sick aquatic wild bird (goose, duck, swan) is discovered, it must be reported to the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (Tel.: 2478 2539, e-mail: info@alva.etat . read ).

Depending on the evolution of the disease, the measures will be updated.

The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration would like to point out that the consumption of meat and eggs is without risk for humans.

An additional case of avian influenza (virus type H5N1) has been confirmed in a black-headed gull (Lachmöwe) in Remerschen

Communicated 26.05.2023

As of May 26, 2023, an additional case of avian influenza (virus type H5N1) was confirmed in a black-headed gull (Lachmöwe) in Remerschen.
For some time now, cases of bird flu have been increasing among colonies of black-headed gulls in different regions of Europe. The risk of a large-scale spread of the epizootic is currently low, as wild birds are in the midst of breeding and therefore remain in a specific area. However, the risk of avian influenza transmission to domestic poultry in these nesting areas is high.

The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration therefore strongly recommends that farms with poultry in the Remich canton comply with the following preventive measures:

  • Biosecurity rules must be scrupulously respected;
  • Feeding and watering must take place in premises that are not accessible to wild birds;
  • It is advisable to protect the poultry exit areas with nets to avoid any contact with wild birds;
  • An unusually high number of cases of illness or death, a drop in egg-laying performance, or a decrease in water and food consumption should be reported to a veterinarian;
  • All poultry imports must be covered by a health certificate (TRACES) issued by an official veterinarian of the country of origin. This obligation also applies to the purchase of poultry on a market.
ALVA takes this opportunity to remind you that all owners of poultry must register their establishment with the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration.
