  • The summary of the event including two H7N3 LPAI outbreaks identified as H7N3 strain on 7 April and 20 May 2011 is as follows:
    • 1. The samples of the first outbreak of H7N3 LPAI were collected on 28 March 2011 from a duck breeder farm.
      • The outbreak was detected by the intensified surveillance of the 3-km-radius area around the H5N2 outbreak identified on 21 March 2011.
      • Sampling of the first index farm was done on 20 April and 25 May 2011, and results of virus isolation were negative.
      • The healthy ducks were kept for slaughter for consumption, and the animals in the index farm were depopulated completely on 25 June 2011.
      • Cleaning and disinfection of the index farm was completed under the supervision of prefectural livestock disease control center.
    • 2. The second outbreak also occurred in a duck breeder farm and was detected by the intensified surveillance of the 3-km-radius area around the first index farm.
      • The clinical investigation of the farm showed the animals were in healthy condition.
      • From the second farm, H7N3 virus was isolated and characterized from the swab samples, collected on 20 May 2011, and determined on 26 May 2011.
      • The second sampling of the second farm was carried out on 29 June 2011.
      • The negative results of RT-PCR and virus isolation were obtained on 13 July 2011.
      • There has been no new case of NAI since the outbreak of LPNAI detected on 20 May 2011.
    • Intensified and active surveillance performed on surrounding farms within 3-km-radius of both index farms (a total of 169 farms including 37 farms overlapping with surrounding farms of H5N2 outbreak farm) and in the whole territory has shown no other outbreaks of NAI.
    • According to the aforementioned information and to the Article 10.4.3. of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2011), Chinese Taipei declares that the H7N3 low pathogenic notifiable avian influenza outbreaks are resolved and that, therefore, it regains its notifiable avian influenza free status as from 27 August 2011.
  • Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2011).
