The cleaning and disinfection of the second infected premises (2009-BC-002) was done under the direct supervision of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). It was completed and approved on 11 March 2009.
The CFIA conducted targeted and comprehensive surveillance on all commercial poultry farms located within 3 km of or with an epidemiological link with the two infected premises identified during this event. A total of 53 premises were investigated by the CFIA and representative samples of susceptible animals were tested.
All of the test results were negative for the presence of notifiable avian influenza (NAI).
While all these farms were maintained under quarantine during the investigation, all restrictions have now been lifted by the CFIA.
On 1 April 2009, the last two quarantines were released and there are no outstanding quarantines in place in the province of British Columbia.
The CFIA then started a post outbreak survey for NAI in the province of British Columbia on 11 March 2009, in accordance with Article 10.4.3.2, Chapter 10.4 (Avian Influenza) of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2008).
The Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) structure is being used for the design and implementation of the survey.
The CFIA expects to report the results in June 2009, 3 months after the cleaning and disinfection of the last infected premises, with the objective of regaining NAI free status for the province of British Columbia as per OIE guidelines.
The next follow-up report will be submitted in June 2009.
Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2008).
