Physician responds to parents after child?s death

The recent death of an eight-year-old boy due to a sudden illness has some Shreveport parents concerned about the health and safety of their own children.
Over the weekend, Frederick Miller Carmody?s obituary was shared on social media by his school, St. Joseph Catholic School and others, and has since caused some parents to ask about the severity of the illness that took his life.
Dr. John Vanchiere, chief of pediatric infectious disease at LSU Health Shreveport, said he?s received many phone calls from pediatricians in the community asking if classmates or others in contact with Carmody need to take antibiotics or other precautions.
Vanchiere said, ?No.?
Due to medical privacy laws, Vanchiere said he couldn?t go into detail about Carmody?s case, but was able to confirm the death was a result of Streptococcus Pneumoniae ? also known as Pneumococcal Disease ? and was able to discuss information about the infection.
