SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been over 490,000 reported cases of the flu this season in the United States.

Of those numbers, Louisiana currently leads the nation with the highest number of early flu activity.

The national average is approximately 3.5% which means roughly every 1 in 20 people may get the flu. However, in Louisiana, that number is right around 11% which means 1 in every 10 people may catch the flu.

“About 30% of all cases of the flu in the state are in people 0 to 4, and then when we add ages 5 to 11, it’s another 13%. So, you’re getting about 45%, right, 11 and below, said Martha Whyte, LDH’s regional medical director.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Centers for Disease Control’s influenza map has Louisiana shaded purple, indicating very high levels of the flu. Other viruses are sickening people as well, in what some have dubbed a “quademic.”

“We’ve been raging for several weeks now, at very high levels,” said Dr. Fred Lopez, an LSU Health New Orleans infectious diseases specialist. “In fact, more than 80% of the country has high-to-very high levels of flu-like illness being reported in their areas of the country. So, we know it’s very high here. It’s been high for weeks.”

Where is flu surging in the US? Some hospitals are overwhelmed in states with high rates

Excerpt:

Louisiana is another influenza hot spot. Janz, who works with LCMC hospitals in south Louisiana, says the number of patients hospitalized and in the ICU with influenza has jumped by about 30% since December.

“We’re able to deal with that influx pretty well,” says Janz. However, he notes that the surges in flu-like illnesses can quickly strain hospitals already busy with other patients.
