The apparent clustering of human cases of influenza A (H5N1) among blood relatives has been considered as evidence of genetic variation in susceptibility. We show that, by chance alone, a high proportion of clusters are expected to be limited to blood relatives when infection is a rare event.


Since December, 2003, 36 family clusters among 261 confirmed human cases of influenza A (H5N1) have been documented (1,2). These clusters range in size from 2 to 8 infected persons; in only 4 clusters were 2 unrelated family members (e.g., husband and wife) infected. This pattern has been considered by the World Health Organization as evidence of genetic variation in susceptibility (3–5), but we show this observation provides little grounds for this inference. We describe a null model in which nuclear families experience a common exposure to an avian influenza virus. The observed degree of clustering in blood relatives is consistent with that expected by chance alone in the absence of genetic variation in susceptibility; other features of the data are also consistent with the null model....

Exactly right.

WHO nonsense being called what it is. Falls into same categoiry as "rare" H2H.

Reporters take note and stop passing on spoon fed nonsense.

Reporters, remember that the same guys who spread the genetic susceptibility nonsense are the same ones that said H2H was rare, H5N1 incubation could be 17 days (to support the blood pudding fairy tale), and who think H5N1 evolution is due to "random mutations".

These are all fairy tales that can only be supported by press releases and gullible reporters.

These are the same guys developing vaccine against obsolete targets.

They do what they do because no one is paying attention other than other members of the flat earth society, who use press releases and reporters to keep the public from being alarmed.

Not at all. The article attacks the genetics part.

The WHO comments on H2H, incubation times, and random mutations are still nonsense.

The article lists disease onset dates, which make H2H obvious for most clusters. However, the model just looked at clusters and common source to show that there was no evidence supporting the genetic susceptability.

The data was largely from WHO updates, which is why the outcome for the Haiphong family of five wasn't listed
