Tripoli, November 2, 2025 (WAL) - The Libyan Center for Biotechnology Research revealed that the H9N2 avian influenza virus is endemic in poultry farms in Libya.
The center based its findings on a study it published in the Open Veterinary Journal entitled: Age-related serological response to H9N2 virus infection in southwest Tripoli, in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tripoli.
The study focused on the age-related serological response of birds to H9N2 infection in broiler chickens in southwest Tripoli to support immunization programs.
The study collected 342 blood samples from six unvaccinated herds. The results showed that the percentage of positive results increased with age, with the absence of antibodies at 10 days of age due to the effect of maternal immunity, highlighting the importance of vaccination after this age to enhance immune effectiveness.
The study concluded that the H9N2 virus is endemic in Libyan poultry farms and that the immune response is related to the age of the birds, stressing the need for continued monitoring to guide control programs, reduce risks, and provide important results for researchers on the transmission of infection and the effectiveness of vaccines.
The H9N2 virus is a subtype of avian influenza virus type A. It affects birds, especially poultry, and can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected birds. However, it is rare for it to be transmitted from person to person, and its infection is mild. Its symptoms are similar to seasonal influenza, and it is constantly monitored by the World Health Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health.
