MADRID / LOGRO?O, 06 (EUROPA PRESS)

Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministry of Science and Innovation, has recorded a total of 909 influenza cases requiring hospitalization since last October, when flu season began, of which at least 78 have died finish .

In the last week of analysis, in the case of La Rioja the incidence of the virus has been 132 per 100,000 population, which is below the national average.

This follows from the last newsletter of the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network, for the week of 23 to 29 January, which further specifies that 91 percent of these hospitalizations were for infection by the H1N1 virus, responsible for two years of the epidemic of influenza A.

According to the information available at this time, 75 percent of patients had some risk factor for complications from flu but, despite being included in the groups where vaccination is recommended (chronic diseases, pregnancy, obesity or over 60 ), up to 80 percent were not immunized with the vaccine this season.

Among the most common clinical conditions, 76 percent developed pneumonia, 31 percent of acute respiratory distress syndrome, 26 percent bacterial coinfection, and 11 percent multiple organ failure. In fact, almost half (43 percent) of the cases needed to be admitted to the ICU.

At the moment we still observe a higher incidence of severe cases in men (59 percent of the total), while 36 have also been reported hospitalizations of pregnant women, 70 percent of more than 24 weeks gestation.

In terms of age, 15 percent of these severe cases detected in children under 15 years, although more than half of cases (68 percent) occurred in persons between 15 and 64.

In terms of deaths, 62 percent were men and 87 percent corresponded to infection by the H1N1 virus. In addition, 90 percent had factors but only 12 percent had received the influenza vaccine.

SECOND WEEK OF DROP IMPACT

On the other hand, in terms of hit rate in the week of analysis shows that influenza activity drops second straight week, reaching 203.84 cases per 100,000 population, compared with 226.9 cases of previous week.

The hardest hit community in the last week returns to the Canaries, with 495.9 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Extremadura (378.5), Aragon (295.4), Cantabria (248.6), Andalusia (247.8 ), Navarre (218.3) and Castilla-La Mancha (210.5).

Already below the national averages Melilla (202.8), Asturias (199), Basque Country (192.6), Catalonia (166.5), Baleares (154.9), Valencia (150.7) , La Rioja (132), Ceuta (202.8), Comunidad de Madrid (125.4) and Castilla y Le?n (114.9), while Galicia and Murcia no data are needed.

So far have been identified maximum peak influenza activity in seven sentinel networks in central and northern Spain, while in five other developments is stable.

However, the decline in influenza activity is reflected in a decrease in incidence rates in children under five years and the 15-64 age group.
