Whooping cough: death of an infant, 70 cases since the beginning of the year, ARS strongly recommends vaccination

Faced with the death of an infant and the sharp increase in whooping cough cases in Réunion, the Regional Health Agency reiterates that "vaccination is strongly recommended." Since the beginning of 2025, 70 cases have been reported, almost triple the number of cases recorded last year at the same time.

Resurgence of whooping cough in Reunion: vaccination strongly recommended

August 25, 2025

The circulation of whooping cough has been increasing significantly in Réunion Island for several months.

In the first half of 2025, 70 cases were reported to the Regional Health Agency (ARS), compared to 17 during the same period in 2024, an increase of nearly 300%. Of these cases, 36% involved children under 5 years of age, and severe forms have been reported, including the recent death of a hospitalized infant.

Faced with this situation, the ARS La Réunion reminds that vaccination remains the best protection against severe forms, particularly for infants and pregnant women.

Reminder: What is whooping cough?

It is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory infection, which is transmitted by coughing or sneezing. It typically manifests itself through:
  1. severe and repeated coughing fits , which can last several weeks,
  2. vomiting triggered by coughing .
Treatment is based on taking antibiotics, sometimes in hospital, particularly for children under 3 months old.
