BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) announced Tuesday the Louisiana Office of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections.

As of Dec. 14, Louisiana has 24 reported cases of HAV infection, three of which are not linked to the current outbreak. That?s nearly three times the number of cases LDH saw in 2017.

East Baton Rouge Parish and surrounding parishes, including Livingston and Ascension parishes, has fewer than five HAV cases. Morehouse Parish has between five to ten reported cases, according to a map that lists the HAV cases by parish...

Hep A outbreak spreads in Louisiana
Louisiana Network
June 26, 2019

Louisiana?s Hepatitis A outbreak is growing, with 305 new cases since an outbreak was declared last December. Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter says while we haven?t seen outbreaks in the thousands like other states, it?s still a significantly more cases than normal.

?Typically, in Louisiana, every year we see between five and fifteen cases of Hepatitis A, so to have 300 cases, in less than 12 months, is very concerning for us.?...

Ongoing hepatitis A outbreak in Louisiana doubles in just two months
BY EMILY WOODRUFF | Staff writer Jul 23, 2019 - 2:44 pm

In a typical year, Louisiana sees about nine cases of hepatitis A, a liver infection that causes fatigue, jaundice, nausea and in rare instances death.

But almost 100 new cases of hepatitis A have been reported in just the last month, according to the state Department of Health.

Louisiana is one of several states in the midst of a hepatitis A outbreak that shows no signs of slowing down, despite efforts to stamp it out.

The outbreak is spreading mostly among drug users and homeless people, according to Dr. Frank Welch, the medical director for Louisiana?s Bureau of Community Preparedness. It's most concentrated in Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes, which account for 160 to 200 of the cases...
