Whooping cough outbreak hits Barton County

With five current cases of whooping cough and one fatality from the disease in the past month, Barton County is now in the throws of a pertussis outbreak, Health Director Shelly Schneider said Monday morning.
According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, an outbreak is at least two incidents of the illness in people who don?t reside in the same household. Schneider said Barton County has surpassed that threshold.
?This is a reality,? Schneider said. The current cases, all in Great Bend, are in residents ranging from 4 months to middle age.
Barton County is not alone. There is an outbreak in Johnson County and several cases in the City of Wichita. McPherson County has weathered a number of cases as well...

GREAT BEND, Kansas ? Two more cases of whooping cough have been confirmed over the weekend in Barton County. This brings the total of confirmed cases during the outbreak to seven. More than 30 people are still being investigated for the illness.

?It can still spread, it could be an ongoing thing and continue to spread you just don?t know,? said Trisha Martin an LPN at Clara Barton Hospital.

Barton County health officials say they went a week and a half without a new confirmed case of whooping cough. That streak ran out this weekend, with two children testing positive...

HUTCHINSON, Kan. ? A large increase in whooping cough cases has Reno County health officials on guard against an outbreak. Over the last two weeks, 3 cases have grown to 19, and all have been traced back to three Hutchinson schools.

Instead of starting summer break under the sun at the pool, several Hutch students from two elementary schools and the high school are home with whooping cough. Those with loved ones in the district say they're surprised by the outbreak...

Reno County dealing with whooping cough outbreak

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) ? Reno County health officials are dealing with a whooping cough outbreak that includes 23 suspected cases of the illness.

The Hutchinson News reports (http://bit.ly/1drbs2q ) health officials are asking sick people to stay home and for health providers to relay information on suspected cases of whooping cough, which is characterized by intense coughing, fever and runny nose.

The health department says the county reported 3 suspected cases in mid-May, 18 in early June and 23 as of Monday...

Three cases of whooping cough diagnosed in Kingman County

Kingman County reported three cases of whooping cough after a 10-year break from any reported cases, county officials said.

The latest case was diagnosed June 3 and was an unvaccinated 91-year old, according to a Kingman County Health Department release. The other two cases were an 11-year old diagnosed on May 21 and a teenager on March 27, according to the release. The county reports all three cases were unrelated. They were the county?s first reported cases since 2004...
