BANDUNG: Despite the widespread coverage of bird flu cases in the media, including television, almost every day, public knowledge about the disease is still poor, according to an executive of the Bandung chapter of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef).
Steve Aswin said Saturday that a study launched by Unicef and TNS research institute in Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi and Garut in November disclosed that only 31 percent of over 500 respondents knew about the dangers of bird flu.
More importantly, up to 27 percent of the people who actually raised chickens and other birds as a hobby were unconcerned about the spread of the virus, he said, adding that about 36 percent of those who raised chickens were concerned about the disease.
"They are of that opinion because those raising the birds as a hobby are not directly affected economically," Aswin said. -- JP
