17 tribals contract viral hepatitis

Staff Reporter

Members of Cherunelly tribal colony in Nelliampathy

Thrissur: Seventeen members of the Cherunelly tribal colony in Nelliampathy were admitted with viral hepatitis to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Friday. The tribals, including 12 children and five women, were suffering from high fever, Dr. K. Mohanan, Superintendent, MCH, said.

According to preliminary investigations, water contamination in the tribal hamlet was suspected to be the reason for the outbreak of the disease, he said.

A small stream near the colony is the water source for the 40-odd families in the colony. The patients complained that the water in the stream was polluted by the waste dumped by visitors to the majestic Nelliyampathy hill ranges.

A special board has been formed and a special ward has been set up in the MCH for the tribal people, Dr. Mohanan said. The hospital has also made arrangements to provide food to the patients, he said.
