Cholera kills five in Kuria

Five people have died in Kuria West District in what doctors suspect to be a cholera outbreak in the area.

Three of the victims died in hospitals while the two others succumbed to acute diarrhoea and vomiting in Masaba and Mabera divisions.

At least 18 other people are admitted to various hospitals in Kuria West and Migori Districts with similar symptoms and are still receiving treatment.

Kuria DC James Mugwe confirmed the deaths but said doctors had intervened to arrest the situation.

He said the medical workers had taken samples from the patients to Kisumu for tests to ascertain the outbreak of the disease.

It is suspected that the outbreak occurred following an acute water shortage that has hit Kehancha and Isebania border towns for the past two weeks, forcing the residents to use contaminated water from the polluted River Ragana.

The DC assured the residents that the medical personnel in the area had enough drugs to deal with the situation.

Kenya: Fears of Cholera Outbreak As Patients Jam Hospitals

Nairobi — Medical officers in Migori and Kuria West districts are battling what is suspected to be a cholera outbreak.

About 200 people have been admitted to hospital in the last week with cholera-related symptoms.

The officers warned on Wednesday the cases were increasing daily despite measures to contain them and appealed to residents to observe hygiene.

Wards in public hospitals are congested, with some patients sleeping on the floor for lack of bedding.

Kuria West has recorded about 150 admissions in the last four days, says the district medical officer, Dr Solomon Bongo.

Cholera deaths in Western Kenya hit eight

The death toll from cholera outbreak in Migori and Kuria West district about five hundred kilometers west of Nairobi has now hit eight after three more people succumbed to the disease.
According to the Nyanza Provincial Director of Medical Services Dr. Ojwang Lusi whose province covers the two districts, 146 people had since been treated and discharged while another eighty were still receiving treatment in various hospitals and health facilities within the region.

?The Ministry is doing all it can to make sure that it contains the disease? He said adding that already, a number of health officials had been sent to the worse affected areas.

The disease, which broke out two weeks ago in Kuria West district along the Kenyan Tanzania border has been blamed on lack of clean drinking water as well as lack of toilets in the region. Among those who have died include an elderly Tanzanian national.
