Health officials announce confirmed measles case in Kentucky

Kentucky confirms its first case of measles since February 2023 in a resident who had been traveling internationally.
The individual visited a Planet Fitness in Frankfort and health officials are attempting to contact others who may have been exposed.
This case follows the first US measles death since 2015, which occurred recently in Texas amid an outbreak.

Kentucky health officials announced Wednesday that a case of measles has been confirmed in the commonwealth.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health and Frankfort County Health Department said the individual who tested positive recently traveled internationally in areas with ongoing measles transmissions before visiting a fitness center in Frankfort.

The individual attended Planet Fitness at at 101 Allen Way in Frankfort from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday. Health officials are working to identify and contact the individuals who may have been exposed at that location.​..

Kentucky measles cases rise to six after four new infections

​FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced Friday there are four new measles cases in Kentucky.

Three of the cases are from the same household in Woodford County, while the fourth involves a person who was exposed to measles while traveling internationally. The Todd County case is separate from the Woodford County case.

The health department said it is now working to find and identify others who may have been exposed to those infected while they were countagious. None of the four people were vaccinated against measles. CHFS said this marks six measles cases for the year.​..

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A measles exposure has been reported in Jessamine County.

Officials have confirmed a measles exposure at the Jessamine County Aquatic Center.

The exposure date was June 20 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.​..

the measles outbreak in Central Kentucky is growing.

As of July 7, there were eight confirmed cases of the highly contagious measles virus connected to an outbreak in Woodford and Fayette counties, Lexington-Fayette County Health Department officials said Monday.

That includes four new cases in Fayette County, all of which are tied to the first Fayette County case. Those who got the virus were considered household contacts.​..

Mayor Craig Greenberg confirms positive case of measles in Jefferson County

​A measles case has been confirmed in Jefferson County, Mayor Craig Greenberg announced during a July 15 news conference.

Greenberg said officials are investigating a "pediatric case," adding that the individual recently traveled internationally to a country known to be experiencing a measles outbreak. He did not specify where the individual traveled.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is conducting "contact tracing" to determine who the infected individual crossed paths with. Those individuals will be contacted by health officials and asked to isolate, Greenberg said.​..

Dr. Kris Bryant, the associate medical director at the Louisville health department and a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Norton Children’s Hospital, said the latest patient is “a known contact” with the city’s first case of 2025, which was reported in mid July.

“This individual has been in quarantine since becoming aware of their exposure, and so there are no new public exposures as a result of this case,” Bryant said during a Tuesday press conference.

The city’s latest case, which health officials confirmed Monday, is unrelated to an outbreak in central Kentucky, she said. An outbreak is defined as three or more related cases.

Of the 14 cases across Kentucky, 13 were in unvaccinated individuals and one was in a person who only received part of the recommended vaccine series, Bryant said.​..

​An unvaccinated Kentuckian in Jessamine County has contracted measles, marking the state’s first known case of 2026, health officials announced Thursday.

The person was exposed to the highly contagious disease by an out-of-state traveler in Fayette County between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services said.

This is the first case in a Kentuckian since July 2025, the cabinet said.​..

Officials confirmed at least one unvaccinated person in western Kentucky's Christian County contracted measles, a highly contagious respiratory disease. Officials warn of several unconfirmed cases in the area too.

As measles outbreaks become increasingly common across the country, Kentuckians may be looking at a measles outbreak in Christian County. Health officials warned Thursday of one confirmed case of measles, with more unconfirmed reports in the area.

​FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 18, 2026) – Kentucky health officials have confirmed an ongoing measles outbreak in Kentucky and announced that the state has had more confirmed cases of measles in 2026 than in any year since 1991. Team Kentucky is reminding everyone that the best way to protect against measles is through the safe and effective vaccine.

“This is the largest measles outbreak Kentucky has experienced in many years,” said Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Dr. Steven Stack. “Measles is almost entirely preventable for those who have had two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and we urge all parents and caregivers to make sure their children are immunized, so they are protected against this serious, sometimes life-threatening illness.”

The announcement follows confirmation of 15 cases in Western and Central Kentucky in the last four days. Those cases are in Christian, Owen, Todd, Trigg, and Washington Counties. Working with local health departments, the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) is actively investigating and expects case numbers and counties associated with the outbreak to increase. Four cases of measles were reported earlier this year in Jessamine County.

All 19 cases in 2026 have been in individuals who were not vaccinated against measles. Two people have been hospitalized.

Public health officials are working to identify sources of exposure, identify cases, and report all measles cases associated with the outbreak. Updated case counts are published each weekday by KDPH on the state’s measles dashboard...
