The U.S. Embassy in Jordan is implementing a shelter-in-place for all personnel. We recommend all Americans do the same until further notice.



Actions to Take:
  • Find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.
  • Avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Keep your phone charged and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of your status.
  • Contact the Jordanian police by dialing 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Event: ACS Appointments Cancelled, Shelter in Place in Effect

The safety and security of Americans abroad is our number one priority. We will continue to share crucial information you need to make informed decisions about your safety. The U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan, is canceling all American Citizen Services appointments until further notice.

The embassy has instructed all Mission personnel to shelter-in-place. We recommend all Americans do the same. We encourage all travelers to review our most recent Security Alerts, review any travel plans in case of disruptions and make appropriate decisions to keep themselves and their families safe.

Please note that Jordanian authorities have ended the temporary closure of Jordanian airspace, previously in place daily from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. Please continue to follow local media and information from the Government of Jordan for any updates or changes to airspace status.

If it is safe to do so and you wish to depart Jordan, please consult directly with your airline or a travel agent to determine what options may currently be available.

The following land border crossings are currently operating as follows. Operating hours are subject to change at any time, and the ability to cross may depend on your nationality and on security conditions at the border:
  • King Hussein/Allenby Bridge: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except Saturdays)
    Wadi Araba Crossing: 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    Jordan Valley Crossing: 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    Jaber Crossing (with Syria): Open 24 hours a day
The following border crossings with Saudi Arabia are open 24 hours a day:
  • Umari (Al‑Omari) Border Crossing: Primary crossing, approximately 155 km from Amman
  • Mudawara (Al‑Mudawwara) Border Crossing: Located farther east, approximately 322 km from Amman
  • Al‑Durra Crossing (opposite Haql): Connecting Aqaba with the Saudi city of Haql
Ferry services also operate between Aqaba and Egypt. Individuals seeking to depart Jordan by sea should contact ferry operators directly for schedules and availability.

Travelers should plan accordingly and monitor for possible changes depending on the security situation. Individuals are strongly encouraged to follow local sources and news outlets for updates. For emergency situations, U.S. citizens may contact Amman‑ACS@state.gov or call +1 202-501-4444.

We are providing options to assist Americans to depart the Middle East. Please continue to check your email for additional information or last-minute changes. We are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to providing timely information and assistance to U.S. citizens in the affected area. We urge all Americans to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ instructions, and review the latest guidance from the U.S. Embassy. Your well-being remains our foremost concern.

We will continue to share up-to-the-minute information you need to make informed decisions about your safety.

U.S. citizens in Jordan can also call the State Department at +1-202-501-4444 or email Amman‑ACS@state.gov to receive departure information and assistance.

If you choose to not take advantage of departure options available, U.S. citizens should be aware that Iran has attacked civilian locations across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, embassies, and other civil facilities. You should be prepared to shelter in place in a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.

Options to Depart

  • Commercial flights are currently operating out of Queen Alia International Airport. Americans should strongly consider departing on one of these flights if they believe it is safe to do so. Visit the airline website or consult a travel agent to find information about flight availability and purchasing tickets.
  • The following land border crossings are currently operating as follows. Operating hours are shortened on Fridays and Saturdays and are subject to change at any time, and the ability to cross may depend on your nationality and on security conditions at the border:

  • Avoid protests and demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Pay close attention to communications from local officials.
