Deaths spark row
OUR CORRESPONDENT
Dumka, July 31: Three villagers of Khairvani, 7km from Dumka, died of an undiagnosed disease yesterday, while two others with similar symptoms were admitted to Dumka sadar hospital today.

While Hopni Soren (31) and two sisters, Kanak Lata (15) and Priyanka (9) died, those hospitalised were one Santoshni (23) and Hopni?s daughter Merry Saloni.

As Dumka civil surgeon S.N. Jha claimed ignorance about the disease, 40 irate district Congress committee members, led by district party president Shyamal Kishor Singh, today staged a protest near the residence of the Dumka inspector-general, demanding Jha?s removal. They blocked Dumka-Rampurhat road for two hours, prompting Dumka police to detain them.

Jha said all five showed similar symptoms of chest pain and unease, but he could not ascertain the cause of disease. Notably, the village lacks a primary health centre.
