Tuesday, October 24, 2006

LUCKNOW,India: With the death of five children in the last 24 hours, the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) toll in Uttar Pradesh has reached a staggering 262 in Uttar Pradesh, said a senior state health department official on Monday.

Dr Umakant Prasad, Joint Director Health, also told reporters here that at least 1,211 people, suffering from JE, have been admitted to various hospitals in the state.

Gorakhpur, Deoria, Maharajganj, Sant Kabirnagar, Kushinagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Faizabad, Azamgarh, Gonda, Mau, Ballia and Balrampur districts of UP have reported the majority of JE cases, he said.

The endemic afflicts eastern UP during monsoon every year.

JE is a group of mosquito-borne virus diseases that can affect the central nervous system causing severe complications and even death. The disease can progress into serious brain infection.

Among the survivors, 30 percent would have serious brain damage including paralysis.

It should be borne in mind that most of these kids were vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis earlier this year.
